Championship Division: FINAL
(1) Luke Gagne
(3) Brian Dempsey
The battle to become Fall River Country Club's 2012 Club Champion is down to the final two players! Medalist and #1 seed Luke Gagne will meet the #3 seed, Brian Dempsey, for FRCC's 2012 title on Sunday, July 1st at 8:00 a.m. Both Gagne and Dempsey survived great matches in Saturday's semi-final round to earn their spot in the championship round.
Luke met the #4 seed, Rob Touchette, in the upper-half semi-final of the division's match play bracket. Despite a solid Front 9 by Touchette, Gagne quickly built a two hole lead by virtue of shooting an even-par 35. The first five holes on the Back 9 changed little, but Gagne broke through and birdied the par 3 15th. He was now up 3 holes with just three remaining. However, Touchette instantly fought his way back and won consecutive holes, prolonging the match to the 18th.
Both players navigated the final hole of regulation safely, with tee shots in the fairway and approach shots safely on the green. Gagne was first to putt. He gently nestled his thirty-foot putt to less than three feet, but the door was open for Touchette to potentially force a playoff. As Touchette's putt rolled steadily toward the hole, a sudden-death playoff seemed imminent to anyone watching. As the twenty-five foot putt traversed the final six inches, the ball quickly snapped off line to miss the needed birdie. Gagne moved on to the final match.
The second semi-final match pitted Dempsey against the #2 seed, Bob Reis. While the match lacked the dramatic ending of the first semi-final, the caliber of golf was even better! Playing from the furthest length of the tees and featuring hole locations befitting a Club Championship, not many players lose a match at FRCC while shooting a score a stroke or two above par. Unfortunately for Reis, that would be the case. Dempsey "simply" cruised around the course, going the entirety of the match playing under-par golf!
How well was Dempsey striking the ball? He landed his approach shot on the first twelve holes consecutively in regulation! His miss on #13 was right on-line, but stopped on the fringe, just a few feet short of the putting surface. While Reis had opportunities to cut into Dempsey's lead, birdie putts throughout the Back 9 failed to drop until #15. That clutch putt brought Reis to the 16th tee down two holes, but with now just three remained to go.
Dempsey's superb play, coupled with a few bad breaks for Reis on #16 and #17, squashed any chance the match would make it to the 18th tee. Reis had played very well, but Dempsey was just the better golfer. The match would come to a halt on #17, and Dempsey joined Gagne in the final.
While Sunday will mark Gagne's first appearance in the FRCC Club Championship final, Dempsey is making an incredible fourth consecutive trip to the final match! The two will start play at 8:00 a.m. on July 1st. Soon we'll see if Luke Gagne joins the decades-long list of FRCC Club Champions, or Brian Dempsey adds a second crown to his resume!
